Definite Clause Grammars for Language Analysis - A Survey of the Formalism and a Comparison with Augmented Transition Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
A clear andpowerfulformalism for describing languages, both natural and artificial, follows f iom a method for expressing grammars in logic due to Colmerauer and Kowalski. This formalism, which is a natural extension o f context-free grammars, we call "definite clause grammars" (DCGs). A DCG provides not only a description of a language, but also an effective means for analysing strings o f that language, since the DCG, as it stands, is an executable program o f the programming language Prolog. Using a standard Prolog compiler, the DCG can be compiled into efficient code, making it feasible to implement practical language analysers directly as DCGs. This paper compares DCGs with the successful and widely used augmented transition network (ATN) formalism, and indicates how ATNs can be translated into DCGs. It is argued that DCGs can be at least as efficient as ATNs, whilst the DCG formalism is clearer, more concise and in practice more powerful

Stochastic Definite Clause Grammars
This paper introduces Stochastic Definite Clause Grammars, a stochastic variant of the wellknown Definite Clause Grammars. The grammar formalism supports parameter learning from annotated or unannotated corpora and provides a mechanism for parse selection by means of statistical inference. Unlike probabilistic contextfree grammars, it is a context-sensitive grammar formalism and it has the abil...
متن کاملCHR grammars
A grammar formalism based upon CHR is proposed analogously to the way Definite Clause Grammars are defined and implemented on top of Prolog. These grammars execute as robust bottom-up parsers with an inherent treatment of ambiguity and a high flexibility to model various linguistic phenomena. The formalism extends previous logic programming based grammars with a form of context-sensitive rules ...

متن کاملA Phrase Structure Grammar Of The Arabic Language
A lot of work has been done in the field of natural language processing (NLP) for ARABIC. Few researchers have tried hard to apply on ARABIC the methods of computational linguistics, as for example, Definite Clause Grammar (DCG) [I] and Augmented Transition Networks (ATN) [2]. Because there is not a modern linguistic model for ARABIC grammar within the frame of computational linguistics, the re...
متن کاملExtraposition Grammars
This paper presents a grammar formalism for natural language analysis, called extraposition grammars (XGs), based on the subset of predicate calculus known as definite, or Horn, clauses. It is argued that certain important linguistic phenomena, collectively known in t ransformational grammar as left extraposition, can be described better in XGs than in earlier grammar formalisms based on defini...
